According to this fascinating chart it should be quite soon! The age at which people get married for the first time, has risen significantly for the past 60 years and we can say it’s culture, money or the boom in technology affecting that, but we all know the truth. People are not scared of commitment, people are scared for their money, and options. It’s true though. A marriage usually ends because one party cheats or both partners have financial problems. So a marriage these days is less of a romantic decision and more of a safe step – here, let’s combine our bank accounts and stay home more so we don’t look at potential options.
I don’t think it’s any surprise that people don’t want to get married too early. I mean you finish university (if you are lucky) at around 22-23 and usually the perfectly secure job isn’t just waiting for you to take it. You start applying, going to interviews and whining about still living with your parents. In the meantime, it might be your parents still repaying your smartphone, so you don’t really have a say. You start working and by the time you are 26-27 you have just managed to save up some money, figured out what you want in life and ideally, scored a stable relationship. But that’s what most young people go through. We are not offered managerial roles in the beginning, we cannot save up for a deposit for a house in one year, we cannot afford to leave work to have a baby. So what’s the other option? Postponing. Postponing commitment, postponing engagement, postponing marriage, postponing starting a family.
According to this chart, I am supposed to get married by the end of 2014. Or at least get engaged. I definitely don’t see it happening. It’s like – this will happen to everyone else, but me. This is how it feels like. And it’s not because I am not worthy of being asked, but it’s because I have had other priorities than scoring a husband or turning my current boyfriend into a husband material. But do I have to worry because of a stupid survey and a chart that shows me that millions of women my age are already married? I don’t think so. It will happen when it happens. And if it doesn’t, then I will deal with that too.
